Today I change a bit the presentation to make it more clear. Tribute to many a wine blog I know… I must acknowledge that this is more practical and easier to read.

Las Brisas Pinot Noir by Viña Leyda is a classic from Alko. The earliest vintage I tasted is 2008 (not the best vintage ever). It has always delivered and it consistently got better. This bottle is however a little bit problematic as there is a strong reduction in the nose at the opening.

Reduction (as a defect) is not an accurate word but it describes, by opposition to oxidation, the state of a lack of oxygen. Reduction happens in young wines, with specific grapes or specific winemaking… It is usually not « lethal » to the wine, the wine just needs breathing through decanting or just ageing. This reduction issue is more and more common with the growing number of red wines bottled under screwcap. It is all the stronger with reductive grapes (Pinot Noir and Syrah). If reduction is due to the screwcap, it can sometimes be almost unfixable: I had one bottle which required three (!) days of decanting before getting rid of the smell. In the present case, the bottle needed a lot of breathing (maybe a night) but it was drinkable after a couple of hours of decanting.

Besides this very strong smell of wet socks, one could find a very nice red fruit and slight spices (pepper). The wine is well balanced and structured enough. The mouth was much better a nice balance of cherry, aromatic herbs and discrete earthiness. Very balanced in terms of alcohol, acidity and sweetness. In the mouth, it is one of the best Las Brisas I have tasted. This is an inbetween classic and modern style Pinot Noir. It is not over ripe and over extracted as sometimes Pinot Noir can be in Chile (like Ocio 2009, by Cono Sur, which tasted like a Syrah a few month ago) but it is far more fruity than a Burgundy version of the grape. I can only advise this wine and recommend cellaring it for a year or two to get the best out of it. It already improved greatly since the original release.

Pinot Noir Las Brisas 2008 by Vina Leyda (Chili, Valle de Leyda)

Le Pinot Noir est un cépage que j’affectionne. Il est intransigeant, implacable. Superbe, étymologiquement ! Je suis toujours curieux de ce qu’un vigneron et une région donnent sur ce cépage car on ne peut pas tricher avec lui, ce qui est moins le cas avec le Chardonnay ou même le Sauvignon.

Nombreuses sont mes expériences de Pinot en provenance, notamment, d’Autriche. Plus que tout autre vin, ce sont eux qui m’ont donné la lecture la plus claire des progrès faits par les vignerons. Alors quand je vois un Pinot Noir de la Vallée Centrale du Chili (certes, ce n’est pas tout à fait ça, voir la carte), ça ne peut qu’exciter ma curiosité. Leyda est une vallée proche de la mer, réputé « fraîche », disons, plus fraîche que Valle de Casablanca ou que celle de Colchagua.

Vina Leyda est un domaine que je connais plutôt bien. Ils font un travail innovant, clairement d’exploration (premier millésime en 2001). Les dernières bouteilles que j’ai goûté étaient leur Sauvignon Blanc. Encore très forcé mais clairement en devenir, le potentiel est là. Quid du Pinot Noir, donc, qui je vous rappelle est associé au Sauvignon Blanc à Sancerre par exemple ?

Le vin est d’un abord très dense, sombre pour un Pinot. Au nez, c’est la bonne surprise. On retrouve les arômes de fraise, de cerise et de noyaux propre au cépage. Beaucoup de fraîcheur aussi, pas d’arôme surmûri. C’est somme toute plaisant et équilibré et ça rappelle justement un Sancerre rouge. En bouche, l’essai n’est pas transformé. Elle est marqué par la simplicité et le manque d’acidité se fait sentir. Le climat n’est clairement pas optimal et on devine qu’il y a eu des problèmes de maturité (N’oublions pas que 2008 a été une année difficile au Chili). Le vin est pataud, un peu brouillon. La finale remonte un peu le niveau en laissant une jolie trace de cerise grillée.

Un vin agréable bien que moins plaisant en bouche qu’au nez. Ces vins devront être suivis. En l’état, c’est un vin qui s’accommodera de volailles pas trop parfumées. Il est peu probable qu’il gagne quoi que ce soit à attendre et ne gagne rien à l’aération.
